Is Fall Still Boat Season on Lake Austin?

2 min read

Summer gets all the attention, but plenty of Austinites will tell you fall is the best time to be on Lake Austin. The crowds thin out, the air cools down, and the evenings are made for a slow cruise under the Pennybacker Bridge.

Is it too cold for a boat day?

Not in Austin. Fall afternoons are often warm and sunny, and many days still feel like summer. Mornings and evenings get cooler, so bring a light layer for the ride back.

Swimming depends on the day. Lake Austin is fed by water released from the bottom of Lake Travis, so it runs cool even in summer. In fall, most groups enjoy the cruise and the views, and the brave ones still jump in.

Why fall is great on Lake Austin

  • Fewer boats. Once school starts, weekdays on the lake get quiet.

  • Comfortable temperatures. No more racing for the shade at 2 PM.

  • Earlier sunsets. A sunset cruise fits easily into an evening, even after work.

  • Better availability. Popular dates that sell out in summer are easier to book.

Best fall trips

  • Sunset cruise: 90 minutes of golden light, mansions and limestone cliffs. See the sunset cruise.

  • Sightseeing cruise: a few hours past Little Venice, the waterfront estates and the bridge. See our boat tours.

  • Birthdays and reunions: fall is perfect for groups who want the lake without summer crowds. Compare our party boats.

What to bring in fall

  • A light jacket or hoodie for the evening

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen (the Texas sun is still strong)

  • Drinks in cans or plastic (no glass on Austin's lakes)

  • Snacks and water
