Can You Swim in Lake Austin? Swimming FAQ
Swimming is one of the best parts of a Lake Austin boat day. Here are answers to the questions we hear most.
Can you swim in Lake Austin?
Yes. Swimming from boats is a big part of life on Lake Austin, and groups anchor at spots like Party Cove to swim and float. That's different from Lady Bird Lake downtown, where swimming is prohibited. Read more about Lady Bird Lake.
Is the water cold?
Cooler than you might expect. Lake Austin is fed by water released from deep in Lake Travis, so it often feels refreshing even on hot summer days. Most people find it perfect in summer and brisk in spring and fall.
Where do you swim?
Your captain anchors in a calm spot away from boat traffic. You can jump in from the swim ladder and float on the lily pad.
Do I have to wear a life jacket?
Texas law requires children under 13 to wear a life jacket while a boat under 26 feet is moving.
We have life jackets on board for every age and recommend weaker swimmers wear one in the water.
Never swim alone and always stay close to the boat.
What isn't allowed?
Jumping from any bridge, including the Pennybacker Bridge, is illegal in Austin.
Swimming near moving boats.
Glass containers on the lake.
Tips for a great swim
Bring towels and a dry change of clothes.
Wear water shoes if you have them.
Reapply sunscreen after swimming.
Drink water. Sun and swimming dehydrate you faster than you think.
